What exactly is success? Each person may give a different definition. Success for some, may appear as failure to others for one simple fact: they are not living into their true potential. Some call it a calling. Others label it as a dream. The more practical among us call it a goal. No matter what you label it, it is that thing that only you know. It’s written in the crevices of your heart by the hand of God. Many authors have tried to define it. Poets have written prose about it. Musicians have tried to express it.
We can go to workshops, read books, or articles like this one. We can be coached and given advice, but the true whispers of our internal compass are within us. Some push them down with doubt and depression. Others try to imitate what is around them and be “normal”. Some lose themselves to addiction in a desperate attempt to drown it out. As Zig Ziglar stated in his book, Born to Win, “Fear is the fatal killer of desire. Fear of failure is a big part of the reason why people procrastinate and avoid putting their plans in writing… …I hope you see that planning can either be embraced as an exciting opportunity to win, or avoided as an obligatory exercise or task.”¹
The first step to conquering fear is putting your inner most thoughts onto paper, no matter how crazy they sound. What are your dreams? Write them down! After you write them down begin to work on yourself so that you can flesh out the dream you’ve been given. I love the way Zig says, “…the real opportunity for success lies within the person and not in the job; that you can best get to the top by getting to the bottom of things – and then climbing the stairs of success, one at a time.”²
True success starts from the inside. In a world where success seems measured so many times on the outside of us (wealth, cars, houses, beauty, and who you date or marry) is it any wonder that we look on the outside of ourselves to achieve what we believe is success? In this week’s book of the week, Born to Win, Zig lists six qualities one must possess to be successful. These qualities are: “honesty, character, faith, integrity, love, and loyalty.”³ It is the inside job that creates outside results.
Finally, one of the secret keys that deter many from obtaining success is that they get discouraged before they finally get there. They start looking for short cuts and lose faith. If you really want to become successful you’ll make it your goal to become consistent. Craig Groeschel, pastor of Life.Church, says “Successful people do consistently what other people do occasionally.”4
Make it your aim to become consistent on working on the inside stuff. You don’t know what you don’t know. Become a continual learner and work hard at developing yourself. It is an investment that will always reap great returns.
