10 Leadership Quotes That Changed How I Think

Every week I read a new book on leadership or self-development. This is kind of a running list of some of the quotes that have most challenged me and strengthened me at the same time. I will continue to add to this page as the weeks of reading go on and I invite you to come back to it. You can also join me in leadership and self-development by visiting the Book of the Week page up top. There I list upcoming books of the week along with articles that correspond with past books of the week. Also, let me know your favorite quote! Here it goes…

  1. “That’s how I changed my own patters and behaviors – how I established the rule in my life that I would no longer break a promise to myself no matter how small it was.”¹ ~ Rachel Hollis
  2. “You are who you are and what you are because of what has gone into your mind. You can change who you are and what you are by changing what goes into your mind.”² ~ Zig Ziglar
  3. “It’s worth it to weather the uncertainty. And in case you think uncertainty – otherwise known as risk – is always a negative thing, please allow me to reframe. Risk only means uncertainty. It isn’t positive or negative. Risk just means that you cannot see the future, down or up.”³ ~ Amanda Steinberg
  4. “If I wanted to see others transformed, I had to be transformed. I had to do the hard work myself.”4 ~ John C. Maxwell
  5. “If you identify the cues and rewards, you can change the routine. At least, most of the time. For some habits, however, there’s one other ingredient that’s necessary: belief.”5 ~ Charles Duhigg
  6. “I always bring my core values to feedback conversations… …I don’t chose comfort over being respectful and honest – choosing politeness over respect is not respectful. Second, I allow people to have feelings without taking responsibilities for those feelings.”6 ~ Brené Brown
  7. “Giants are not what we think they are. The same qualities that appear to give them strength are often the sources of great weakness. And the fact of being an underdog can change people in ways that we often fail to appreciate: it can open doors and create opportunities and educate and enlighten and make possible what might otherwise have seemed unthinkable.”7 ~ Malcolm Gladwell
  8. “When you take the leap and believe in the not-yet seen, you aren’t supposed to know how to make it happen, because if you knew how, you probably would have done it already. This is about radically changing your reality, so the way to go about it is also most likely outside of your present awareness.”8 ~ Jen Sincero
  9. “Be more intentional about who you want to become. Have vision beyond your current circumstances. Imagine your best future self, and start acting like that person today.”9 ~ Brendon Burchard
  10. “Then he turned to me and said, ‘This is a very important lesson. You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end – which you can never afford to lose – with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.'”10 ~ Jim Collins (Admiral Stockdale quote)
